This is unfortunate since the safe operation of our fireplaces and wood stoves requires a properly working chimney. During your annual chimney inspection, our certified chimney sweeps will determine the condition of your chimney and offer solutions for chimney repair and maintenance if required.

Smoky Fireplaces

The issue we call “Soot In The Face” (SITF) can be caused by a variety of factors. Smoke goes up the chimney because it’s lighter than cold air and because you have a properly sized chimney for the smoke to exit the residence. A smoky fireplace is a common problem that our customers deal with. Whatever the duration or cause of a smoky fireplace, you’re bound to notice the filthiness and hazard it poses as combustion byproducts enter your home. If you get a puff of air on the outside of the house that is equal to or greater than the force of the smoke going up the chimney, you will experience acute SITF.

Many reasons can lie behind a chimney leak. Imagine the disappointment of snuggling up to a hearth on a rainy day and then finding water-soaked logs. It not only ruins your mood, but can also lead to home damage. Once water penetrates stone and brick, it causes structural wood to rot and thereby results in the need for costly repairs. Midtown Chimney Sweeps can reduce or eliminate such a leak by applying a superficial water repellent to the outside of the chimney. We can repair a chimney leak by using our favorite water repellent Chimney Saver brand product. Midtown Chimney Sweeps Franchising exists today largely because of the vision and perseverance of Byron Schramm. His family, which has lived in Antelope Valley, CA for five generations, boasts aptitude for construction and farming. Byron has earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Mathematics from The Master’s University in Santa Clarita, CA. An entrepreneur at heart, he started three businesses before age 18 and filed for a provisional US Patent on an invention at age 21. He holds a provisional utility patent on a smart phone app for the hearth industry, a license for sailplane aircraft, and two classifications of California and Colorado contractor licenses. A world traveler since his youth, Schramm has spent time in Alaska, Syria, Denmark, Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand. Not to mention, he has visited Switzerland twice… with just a backpack and a low budget.

Byron has proven adept at dealing with failures. For example, he refused to be overwhelmed during the 2007 downturn in the US economy. In April of that year, Byron shifted his attention from the real estate and construction market to the hearth industry and adopted the name Midtown Chimney Sweeps from a hearth business before his. The new enterprise sprang to life with the integration of technology, systems, uniforms, and other best practices. Byron recognizes that the hearth industry must deliver quality customer service. Now that the Midtown Sweeps Dealer Service Network is a successful reality, coupled with the fact that local dealers often suffer unpleasant turnover rates, Midtown’s president may assert that he has uncovered a “blue-ocean strategy” in the chimney sweeping market.

Brandon has been with Midtown since 2020 and is currently our Franchise Business Coach. He draws on his experience as a business owner, as well as his recent knowledge of our industry, to help owners solve problems and set/reach their goals. In his free time you’ll find him in the Denver area, almost certainly with his velcro dog Lemon.

Working to build Midtown Chimney outreach and to support the franchise system with digital marketing and growth, Christina brings innovation, transparency and a ready smile. A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Christina spends her free time with her son, camping, hiking, and traveling as much as possible.

I recently had Midtown Chimney Sweeps of Hillsborough, NJ install a new stainless steel chimney chase cover on my chimney to replace the 30-year-old non-stainless one that was rusty and in need of replacement. Several months later I was in my attic and noticed two small holes in my roof that I could see light coming through, in the vicinity of the chimney. I was concerned about this thinking that water could leak through the holes. I (mistakenly) thought that these holes were made when the chase cover was installed. I contacted the owner Kurt and told him about the holes, and sent him a picture of the holes as well. Kurt called me back right away and said the holes were definitely not caused by Derrick, the technician who installed the chase cover, but they would still come out and patch the holes for me at no charge. When Derrick came to my home to patch the holes, I took him up in the attic to show him where the holes were. He explained that they do not, and never have, put holes through the shingles like that. So it turned out that the holes were made by the roofing company that had installed a new roof a few years prior! And I had just never noticed them before. After Derrick explained what happened I felt terrible thinking that Midtown had made the holes during the chimney work but that was not the case. I was wrong. Yet, Kurt still offered to make the repair at no charge, knowing full well that they did not make those holes. And Derrick was very gracious about making the repair, telling me “it’s no problem…don’t worry about it!” So I can emphatically say that Midtown Chimney Sweeps of Hillsborough is a quality company that puts their customers first, and can heartily recommend them for anyone’s chimney needs.

Old Review: I’m extremely disappointed with the experience we’ve had with Midtown Sweeps. I had issues with my fireplace and asked if they could repair it. The technician came, cleaned it up and was very kind. He told me he would send me out a quote for the replacement part but never did. I reached out to the technician and to the company directly with no response. Mind you I had this service done back in early November…. I am willing to change my review when your company can actually resolve the issue I called you for.

We were very pleased with Midtown Chimney Sweeps. In particular, Ben was personable, professional, and ethical in his dealings with us. Moreover, we consider that the asking price for services was transparent and consistent. While we believed we might need a new firebox or refractory panels, Ben advised we had plenty of life left in the current set up. Despite our efforts to clean the window glass on the firebox doors, they did not shine until Ben arrived to do the job. Knowledgeable, ethical, reasonably price. We recommend and will definitely use Midtown again.
