Building Dreams in Boulder: The Story of David and Hanna Sloan – for edit

Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Boulder, Colorado, is a place where nature and architecture intertwine seamlessly. For David and Hanna Sloan, a husband-and-wife team of homebuilders, this city is more than just a location—it’s their canvas. With a deep respect for the natural beauty of their surroundings and a shared passion for design, they have dedicated their careers to creating homes that are as aesthetically stunning as they are functional.

A Shared Vision

David and Hanna met in architecture school, drawn together by a mutual love for design and craftsmanship. After graduation, they spent years honing their skills separately—David working in high-end residential construction and Hanna in architectural planning. Eventually, their shared vision led them to establish their own home-building firm, Sloan Build, in Boulder. Their mission was simple: to create homes that honored both the landscape and the people who would live in them.

“We believe that a home should feel like it belongs to the land,” Hanna says. “Every project we take on is designed to harmonize with its environment, whether it’s nestled among the pines or perched on a rocky ridge.”

The Dynamic Duo Behind Sloan Build

Dave Sloan — Founder & President

Dave is a botanist turned carpenter turned general contractor. His endless good energy fuels his long workdays and his involvement in the local AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) community. He even spearheads the creation of parade floats for his kids’ elementary school.

In the business, Dave keeps track of who is doing what and where, overseeing client relationships, the pre-construction process, and making sure the journey is enjoyable for everyone involved. Clients often call him when they have questions about costs—or when they want to chat about rare craft beers.

Hanna Sloan — PE, Chief Operations Officer

Hanna started as a water resources engineer before being recruited by Dave to bring structure and efficiency to his growing contracting business. Now, she wears multiple hats, managing finance, marketing, business development, HR, and even event planning. Clients reach out to Hanna when they need design consultations or banking details.

Attention to Detail

What sets the Sloans apart is their unwavering attention to detail. From the very first blueprint to the final finishing touches, they ensure that every element of a home is thoughtfully considered. Their designs feature open floor plans that bring in natural light, sustainable materials that reflect their eco-conscious mindset, and craftsmanship that speaks to their dedication to quality.

One signature feature they incorporate into nearly every home is the Stûv 30 wood stove. Made in Belgium, this modern, high-efficiency stove is both a work of art and a practical heating solution. The Sloans fell in love with the Stûv 30 while designing their own home, where it quickly became the heart of their living space. Now, they encourage every client who wants a wood stove to consider this elegant and powerful model.

“There’s something primal and comforting about a fire,” Dave explains. “The Stûv 30 is not just a heat source—it’s an experience. It transforms the ambiance of a space and brings people together.”

Building with Integrity

The Sloans are committed to not just building homes, but building relationships. They believe that trust and collaboration are key to a successful project. Whether they are designing a minimalist mountain retreat or a sprawling family estate, they work closely with their clients to ensure that the final product reflects their vision.

One of their most trusted partners in bringing their homes to life is Byron Schramm of Midtown Chimney Fireplace Store in Boulder. For years, they have relied on Byron’s expertise to provide bids, source high-quality appliances, and install fireplaces and stoves with precision.

“Byron understands our standards,” says Hanna. “He doesn’t just install a stove and call it a day—he makes sure it fits seamlessly into the space, both aesthetically and functionally. That level of dedication is rare.”

Byron’s work has become an integral part of Sloan Build homes. With his keen eye for placement and technical knowledge, he ensures that every Stûv 30 installation enhances the home’s design while maximizing efficiency.

Creating a Lasting Impact

For Dave and Hanna, building homes is about more than just construction—it’s about legacy. Each home they complete adds to the fabric of Boulder’s landscape, blending innovation with tradition. Their passion for their craft is evident in every beam, every window, and every Stûv 30 that radiates warmth in a winter evening.

“We want our homes to stand the test of time,” says Dave. “Not just structurally, but emotionally. A well-built home should feel like it has always been there, waiting for its owners to arrive.”

As they continue to craft stunning residences in Boulder, one thing is certain: Dave and Hanna Sloan are more than just homebuilders. They are storytellers, creating spaces where life unfolds, memories are made, and families find comfort. And with the support of trusted partners like Byron Schramm, they are ensuring that every home they build is not only beautiful but built to last.
