Are There Chimney Inspection Regulations?

I recently had Midtown Chimney Sweeps of Hillsborough, NJ install a new stainless steel chimney chase cover on my chimney to replace the 30-year-old non-stainless one that was rusty and in need of replacement. Several months later I was in my attic and noticed two small holes in my roof that I could see light coming through, in the vicinity of the chimney. I was concerned about this thinking that water could leak through the holes. I (mistakenly) thought that these holes were made when the chase cover was installed. I contacted the owner Kurt and told him about the holes, and sent him a picture of the holes as well. Kurt called me back right away and said the holes were definitely not caused by Derrick, the technician who installed the chase cover, but they would still come out and patch the holes for me at no charge. When Derrick came to my home to patch the holes, I took him up in the attic to show him where the holes were. He explained that they do not, and never have, put holes through the shingles like that. So it turned out that the holes were made by the roofing company that had installed a new roof a few years prior! And I had just never noticed them before. After Derrick explained what happened I felt terrible thinking that Midtown had made the holes during the chimney work but that was not the case. I was wrong. Yet, Kurt still offered to make the repair at no charge, knowing full well that they did not make those holes. And Derrick was very gracious about making the repair, telling me “it’s no problem…don’t worry about it!” So I can emphatically say that Midtown Chimney Sweeps of Hillsborough is a quality company that puts their customers first, and can heartily recommend them for anyone’s chimney needs.

I was recommended to Midtown and specifically Kurt by my next door neighbor. We needed to get a liner in our utility flue as it did not have one and wanted an opinion on our wood burning chimney. Kurt came out and did a thorough inspection of both and we had him install the utility liner and had some decisions to make about the fireplace chimney as there were several issues. We discussed all the options and in the end decided to go with a conversion to gas. Kurt came to our house and helped us to design the fireplace and pick out all the options. He was helpful with the permit process which can be quite a hassle and even coordinated with the plumber who had to install the gas line. Once the permits were approved he installed the unit in a day and then came back 2 days later after final inspections to finish the work. Kurt was very professional and a pleasure to work with. I would recommend him very highly to anyone.

The fireplace and chimney were thoroughly inspected by Derrick in the house my son was purchasing. The previous owners had stopped using the fireplace and not surprisingly issues were found. The chimney problems were remedied and a wood burning insert was chosen for the fireplace so that extra heat could be provided in the room during the winter. Kurt and Derrick were very responsive to questions we had during the repairs, and after the work was done. Kurt was very helpful, knowledgeable and patient in providing detailed information on the workings of the insert (being novices that we were). Attached is a picture of the fireplace insert. I would recommend Kurt and Derrick at Midtown Chimney Sweeps should you need to get your fireplace & chimney inspected or if you need repairs or a wood burning stove/insert.

Kurt and Derrick were excellent to work with. They provided a comprehensive inspection of our fireplace and chimney. During the course of the inspection there were several cracks and other hazards identified within the panels in the firebox. These cracks were a potential hazard that, left untreated, could have caused a chimney fire. Derrick was very thorough and professional. He took the time to show me and explain what the issues were. In addition, he provided a very thorough chimney inspection report with pictures. Kurt was great to work with as well, regarding the installation of the new panels in the firebox. Derrick did an excellent job explaining what service he was going to provide, and worked conscientiously to finish.

In addition, he took time to answer many questions, especially why a lingering summertime smoky odor might occur long after no wood was burned.

Since 2015 I have had frequent fires in the fireplace during the winter, and get the chimney cleaned every year.

Derrick has done the best job.

My fireplace was leaking after a rainy night. A tech came and diagnosed the issue and re-caulked my chimney; apparently there were some slight holes in the original sealant at its base. We are so pleased with the improvements made to our wood burning stove and chimney. They not only look nice but are safer to use.We had a potentially dangerous issue with the placement of our stove that Kurt was able to repair. Kurt replaced a rusted chimney cap that had blown off with a high quality stainless steel one. Kurt is courteous and professional.
